My friend Jake is a public health professor who recently co-authored a paper entitled, “Stop messing with rumen microbes and focus on reducing ruminant populations for environmental and human health.” After a suspicious slew of rejections, the scientifically rigorous article was published in an imprint of Nature. It makes the case that altering the gut bacteria of cows to reduce their burps’ methane content is a misguided solution to a beefy source of greenhouse gas emissions. “We cannot let carnism–the invisible belief system that conditions us to eat certain animals–cloud our judgement,” Jake and team write in this refreshingly direct piece: https://www.nature.com/articles/s44264-026-00150-z.
