Researching HIV does not require infecting monkeys with it

In response to a Journal of Infectious Diseases article bemoaning the trend away from primate experimentation in HIV research, colleagues and I published an editorial arguing that the move toward human synthetic research models is not only ethically but also scientifically overdue.

As the late philosopher Charles Magel said, “Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals and the answer is: Because the animals are like us. Ask the experimenters why it is morally okay to experiment on animals and the answer is: Because the animals are not like us.” Which is it?
